As I finished my Christmas shopping today, I breathed a sigh of relief and especially for the fact that I am finished 5 days ahead of Christmas Eve. I took a moment to listen to Hay House Radio and to listen to an interview with Wayne Dyer on Oprah's Soul series. It made me appreciate that being a spiritual person isn't supposed to be just when I have time for it but instead is actually most effective at producing a calming effect when in fact I am the most stressed. Right around Christmas time would qualify as that time as there is so much to do and no more time in the day to do it. I'm glad I have the tools necessary to find peace in the little things in life and can see the beauty in nature all around us. "Let Heaven and Nature Sing"
Celebrating Christmas, not just by giving and receiving gifts, has always been a big part of my tradition. Celebrating the true reason for Christmas, Jesus' birth. Going to a church that celebrates other faiths as well as Christianity, UU has been a wonderful experience for me. This doesn't have to be a conflict. Bible texts, advent, preperation for Christ's coming, Christmas Eve worship service, doesn't have to be given up by broadening my sense of spirituality. In fact, I consider myself very lucky. I can celebrate more, not less. Today is St. Nicholas Day. Traditionally, a holiday celebrated in the Christian faith but I am discussing it with my family and treating it as a story or a tradition. I ,myself, am glad St. Nicholas is coming to my house!
